BPO's in India

BPO exports grow 21.4 percent

India's third party business process outsourcing (BPO) services exports in 2007-08 grew 21.4 percent to Rs.264.23 billion, up from Rs.217.60 billion in the previous fiscal, according to a new study.

In dollar terms, the growth was even more impressive at 36.6 percent to $6.6 billion, up from $4.8 billion last fiscal, said the study by Dataquest, the flagship publication of the CyberMedia group.

The magazine, which ranks the top 20 BPO firms in India, once again ranked Genpact as the No. 1 export revenue earner with revenues of Rs.26.59 billion, up by 19.8 percent from Rs.22.20 billion that the company earned last fiscal.

Aditya Birla Minacs, the second ranking revenue earning company last fiscal, maintained its rank this year as well. Its revenues grew 3.1 percent to Rs.15.63 billion up from Rs.15.16 billion last fiscal.

Apart from these two top rankers, the other companies that managed to maintain their ranks this year were Wipro BPO and HCL BPO.

Wipro BPO maintained its 7th rank by growing 22.7 percent to Rs.11.47 billion up from Rs.9.35 billion last fiscal.

Similarly, HCL BPO maintained its 10th rank by growing 18.1 percent to Rs.8.8 billion up from Rs.7.45 billion last fiscal.

TCS BPO improved its ranking from 4th last fiscal to 3rd this fiscal by growing 38.6 percent to Rs.13.64 billion, up from Rs.9.84 billion.

In terms of rankings, the most dramatic improvement has been achieved by Intelenet Global which has moved up six places to come into the top 20 at rank 15. Last fiscal at rank 21 it was not in the list at all.

Intelenet Global has grown a whopping 128.1 percent - the highest among the top 20 - to Rs.6.57 billion up from Rs.2.88 billion last fiscal.

The other companies to have improved their rankings this year were Infosys BPO which moved up four places to rank eight from rank 12 last fiscal.

Firstsource Solutions moved up three places to rank six from rank nine last fiscal by growing 45.7 percent to Rs.11.64 billion against Rs.7.99 billion last year.

WNS Global Services and Mphasis were the other two companies to have improved their rankings. Both moved up one place to 5th and 19th respectively.

Two companies - Aptara and Evene4e - moved out of the top 20 rankings. They were ranked 18th and 19th last year.

Their places have been taken by Accenture India - an absolutely new entrant - and Intelenet Global.

Among the sliders, Cambridge Solutions slid the most to rank nine from rank five last fiscal. In fact, it was the only company that showed negative growth of 10.3 percent with revenues coming down to Rs.8.97 billion from Rs.10 billion last fiscal.

Covergys India fell three ranks from eight to rank 11. Its revenues, however, just managed to show positive growth of 2.5 percent to Rs.8.78 billion from Rs.8.57 billion last fiscal.

IBM Daksh, Aegis BPO, EXL Service and HTMT Global all slid by one rank this year compared to last year.

The top 20 companies accounted for 74.2 percent of the total industry revenue down from 77.4 percent in the last fiscal.

Rise in Inflation again !

Inflation inches up to 11.91 percent

For the first time in more than 13 years, the annual inflation rate climbed to 11.91 per cent in early July, driven by higher costs of commodities and strong demand in the economy.

This is a quarter per cent jump week on week.

It would be the 22nd consecutive week that the inflation rate has been above 5.5 per cent, the central bank's target for the end of the fiscal year in March 2009.

The Cost Price Index inflation is projected to remain this year at 4.8 and 3.2 per cent in the US and the UK, respectively, and 8.8 per cent in the emerging markets. The highest inflation is projected at 15.3 per cent in the CIS counties and at 12.8 per cent in the Middle East and North Africa.

In India, too, there seems to be no respite in sight with the Wholesale Price Index inflation projected to remain in double-digit territory until May 2009.

For the week-ended June 28, wholesale prices-based inflation touched a new 13-year high of 11.89 per cent, much higher than the RBI tolerance limit of 5.5 per cent for the current fiscal.

The WPI moved up from 11.89 percent in the week ending June 28, to 11.91 per cent in the week ending July 5.

Rupee hits over 17-month low at 44.20/23 dlr in early trade

The Indian rupee hit a 17-month low at 44.20/23, 28 paise cheaper from its last close against the greenback, during morning trading today on heavy dollar demand from importers amid weak equity markets. In fairly active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic currency opened lower at 44.20/23 a dollar from its last weekend's close of 43.92/93 a dollar as oil refiners stepped dollar purchases after global crude oil prices surged in Asian trade.

The rupee later recovered to 44.14/15 a dollar in late morning deals. The local unit had last touched this level on March 14 last year when it closed at 44.2450/2525 against dollar.

Forex dealers said there was heavy dollar demand from oil companies following a rise in global crude prices by nearly one dollar to 116.40 dollar a barrel in Asian trade today. They said the intervention by Reserve Bank could not be confirmed but some state-owned banks were believed to be selling dollars at higher levels.

Meanwhile, the Indian benchmark Sensex fell back by 108 points at 1030 hrs, while Asian indices were trading sharply lower during morning trading.

Microsoft Surface (Codename: Milan), is a Multi-touch product from Microsoft which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects. It was announced on May 292007 at D5 conference. Initial customers will be in the hospitality businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, retail, public entertainment venues and the military for tactical overviews. The preliminary launch was on April 172008, when Surface became available for customer use in AT&T stores.

Overview

Surface is essentially a Windows Vista PC tucked inside a table, topped with a 30-inch reflective surface in a clear acrylic frame. A projector underneath the surface projects an image onto its underside, while five cameras in the machine's housing record reflections of infrared light from human fingertips. The camera can also recognize objects placed on the surface if those objects have specially-designed "tags" applied to them. Users can interact with the machine by touching or dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushes across the screen, or by placing and moving tagged objects. Surface has been optimized to respond to 52 touches at a time. During a demonstration with a reporter, Mark Bolger, the Surface Computing group's marketing director, "dipped" his finger in an on-screen paint palette, then dragged it across the screen to draw a smiley face. Then he used all 10 fingers at once to give the face a full head of hair.

Using the specially-designed "tags" on objects, Microsoft Surface can automatically offer additional wine choices tailored to the dinner being eaten based on the type of wine set on the Surface.

Prices will reportedly be $5,000 to $10,000 per unit. However Microsoft said it expects prices to drop enough to make consumer versions feasible in 2010.

Partner companies plan to use the Surface in their hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. The Surface is to be used to choose meals at restaurants, plan vacations and spots to visit from the hotel room. Starwood Hotels plan to allow users to drop a credit card on the table to pay for music, books, and other amenities offered at the resort. In AT&T stores, use of the Surface include interactive presentations of plans, coverage, and phone features, in addition to dropping two different phones on the table and having the customer be able to view and compare prices, features, and plans.

History

The technology behind Surface is called Multi-touch. It has at least a 25-year history, beginning in 1982, with pioneering work being done at the University of Toronto (multi-touch tablets) and Bell Labs (multi-touch screens). The product idea for Surface was initially conceptualized in 2001 by Steven Bathiche of Microsoft Hardware and Andy Wilson of Microsoft Research. In October 2001, a virtual team was formed with Bathiche and Wilson as key members, to bring the idea to the next stage of development.

In 2003, the team presented the idea to the Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, in a group review. Later, the virtual team was expanded and a prototype nicknamed T1 was produced within a month. The prototype was based on an IKEA table with a hole cut in the top and a sheet of architect vellum used as a diffuser. The team also developed some applications, including pinball, a photo browser and a video puzzle. Over the next year, Microsoft built more than 85 early prototypes for Surface. The final hardware design was completed in 2005.

A similar concept was used in the 2002 science fiction movie Minority Report and in the 2005 science fiction movie The Island, by Sean Bean's character "Merrick". As noted in the DVD commentary, the director Steven Spielberg stated the concept of the device came from consultation with Microsoft during the making of the movie. One of the film's technology consultant's associates from MIT later joined Microsoft to work on the Surface project.

Surface was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 302007 at The Wall Street Journal's 'D: All Things Digital' conference inCarlsbad, CaliforniaSurface Computing is part of Microsoft's Productivity and Extended Consumer Experiences Group, which is within the Entertainment & Devices division. The first few companies to deploy Surface will include Harrah's EntertainmentStarwood Hotels & Resorts WorldwideT-Mobile and a distributor, International Game Technology.

On April 17, 2008 AT&T became the first retail location to launch Surface. In June 2008 Harrah’s Entertainment launched Microsoft Surface at Rio iBar and Disneyland launched it in Tomorrowland, Inoventions Dream Home.

Features

Microsoft notes four main components being important in Surface's interface: direct interaction, multi-touch contact, a multi-user experience, and object recognition.

Direct interaction refers to the user's ability to simply reach out and touch the interface of an application in order to interact with it, without the need for a mouse or keyboard. Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiple contact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor. Multi-user is a benefit of multi-touch -- several people can orient themselves on different sides of the surface to interact with an application simultaneously. Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognize the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on top of it.

The technology allows non-digital objects to be used as input devices. In one example, a normal paint brush was used to create a digital painting in the software. This is made possible by the fact that, in using cameras for input, the system does not rely on restrictive properties required of conventional touchscreen or touchpad devices such as the capacitance, electrical resistance, or temperature of the tool used (seeTouchscreen).

The computer's "vision" is created by a near-infrared, 850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the surface. When an object touches the tabletop, the light is reflected to multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960, allowing it to sense, and react to items touching the tabletop.

Surface will ship with basic applications, including photos, music, virtual concierge, and games, that can be customized for the customers.

Specifications

Surface is a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like form factor, 22 inches (56 cm) high, 21 inches (53 cm) deep, and 42 inches (107 cm) wide.. The Surface tabletop is acrylic, and its interior frame is powder-coated steel. The software platform runs on a custom version ofWindows Vista and has wired Ethernet 10/100, wireless 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. Surface applications are written using either Windows Presentation Foundation or Microsoft XNA technology.

At Microsoft's MSDN Conference, Bill Gates told developers of "Maximum" setup the Microsoft Surface was going to have:

  • Intel Core Quad Xeon "WoodCrest" @ 2.66GHz
  • 4GB DDR2-1066 RAM
  • 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive

It has a custom motherboard form factor about the size of two ATX motherboards.

Applications Development

Microsoft Surface applications can be written in Windows Presentation Foundation or XNA. The development process is much like normal Vista development, but custom WPF controls had to be created by the Surface team due to the unique interface of Surface. Developers already proficient in WPF can utilize the SDK to write Surface apps for deployments for the large hotels, casinos, and restaurants at which the machines will be next deployed.

Can anyone estimate the cost of this microsoft Product ?
